Episode 35: We Can Disagree and Still Love Each Other

EPISODE 35: WE CAN DISAGREE AND STILL LOVE EACH OTHER

What if the most Christlike thing we do this holiday season isn’t winning a debate, but listening long enough for someone to finally feel safe enough to tell the truth?

In this episode of Awakened Her, I’m talking about how we can have strong beliefs, speak honestly, and maintain healthy boundaries without losing our compassion for one another.

We do not have to agree on everything to choose love.

As families begin gathering for the holidays, I want us to slow down before assuming we know what is happening inside another person. The quiet person at the table may be grieving. The relative who leaves early may be overwhelmed. The person whose beliefs have changed may have walked a road we have never taken the time to understand.

Sometimes the better response isn’t, “Let me tell you why you’re wrong.” Sometimes it’s simply, “Can you tell me more?”

I also talk about becoming a fruit inspector. Think about how carefully we examine fruit at the grocery store before bringing it home. Why aren’t we equally intentional about examining the fruit produced by the people and relationships we allow into our lives?

Discernment is not the same as condemnation. We can pay attention to patterns, conduct, accountability, kindness, consistency, and respect for boundaries without pretending we know everything inside another person’s heart. We also have to be willing to examine our own fruit.

Are we listening to understand, or are we only waiting for our turn to respond? Can we recognize a real apology and changed behavior? Can we honor someone who trusts us with a painful story without immediately interrupting, correcting, comparing, or throwing Scripture at them?

Sometimes people need guidance. Sometimes they need practical help. Sometimes they simply need to know that another human being heard them.

I also speak directly to those of us who feel everything deeply. Being sensitive to another person’s emotions can be a beautiful gift, but it does not mean we are responsible for carrying everyone’s pain or repairing every relationship around us. Compassion still needs boundaries.

Awakened Her may have begun as a message to women, but men are welcome here too. I want to recognize the good men, devoted fathers, providers, protectors, and partners whose sacrifices are often made quietly. Some men have trusted me with their stories about fatherhood, custody battles, heartbreak, long workdays, and the effort it took to keep showing up when they felt unseen.

To those men: I see you. You are not forgotten.

Relationships are not supposed to be one person endlessly pouring while the other only receives. We are meant to encourage one another, support one another, and become a team.

This episode also looks more closely at 1 Timothy 5:22: “Lay hands suddenly on no man.” In context, this passage concerns responsibility surrounding leadership and appointment. It was never meant to make Christians afraid to comfort someone who is hurting.

Love respects consent, wisdom, safety, and boundaries. But when a hug is welcomed, let it be real. Be present. Slow down. Let another person know, even for a moment, “You are still human to me. I am here, and I am listening.”

We may not repair an entire relationship in one conversation. We may still disagree when we leave the table. But we can listen longer, ask better questions, apologize when necessary, and stop treating every difference as a battle that someone must win.

We don’t need a winner at the dinner table. We need room for one another.

Before your next gathering, ask yourself:

What am I willing to learn?

What boundary do I need to express?

What kindness can I offer without requiring someone to earn it first?

Stay with me through the end for an early version of my new song, Heal the Land. It is a call to drop the stones, open our hands, listen to one another, and let love become something people can genuinely feel.

Next week, I plan to continue this conversation and share another original song called The Voice I Never Lost.

It’s not about agreeing with everyone. It’s about loving everyone.

I see you. I am you.
